Spark & Shade – Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)

I often joke with people that it can be really hard to find Christian EDM online as it takes so long to get past all of the remixes of Oceans (it seems like every Christian with access to a DAW has had a go at it) and, in general, they are largely fairly predictable and cliched so I don’t really give them a lot of attention.

This offering from Spark & Shade certainly does not fall into any of the obvious traps that so many of the other Oceans Remixes do so it’s certainly deserving of some attention.

I think the main thing that really makes this remix standout over other ones I’ve heard is that Spark & Shade have gone for a completely different melody for the instrumental which, although the vocal melody matches the original, gives the track a completely different feel.

I also love the use of a really powerful orchestral chord and melody sequence through the main break that builds the track up beautifully back into the drop. I find certain worship songs evoke an emotional response in me and this does the same, more so than the original Hillsong version.

Personally, I would really like to see and extended version which uses the “Spirit lead me” section of the lyrics over an even more epic orchestral break but, even without it, this is a great track.

I’ve noticed over the last few years that Hillsong are very very hot on copyright and rarely green-light any remixes of their songs and the fact that they have authorised this remix for general release, really speaks to the quality of it.
